If you're casting about for new stuff to read, I agree with the NY Observer's recommendation of Philip Kerr. It's not happy fluffy material, but it's good and layered and damn interesting.

Mang, do I ever. I still think about Spirograph on a disturbingly frequent basis, and every time I do, I wish I hadn't lost track of mine. Do they still make them?
The pen, on the other hand, seems more like when my 'rents were going through their obsession with mandating electric teeth brushing.
Which makes me wish I could go back in time for another reason, this time to say, "whatever."
