I think the article explained well the obstacles faced by the “less fortunate,” but would more baby talk by economically disadvantaged parents really create a world where, “there would be no racial or socioeconomic gap at all.” Hmmm…I have to think about that one.
And, while it may be true that some poor parents may not be aware of baby talk benefits, could it also be that these parents are too stressed, depressed, or distracted to pay proper attention to their young ones? Especially if they work labor intensive jobs and have a few little ones at the same time, running amok and having meltdowns.
And lastly (you know me, I must sully your blog with my know-it-allness spew)…”the greater the number of words children heard from their parents or caregivers before they were 3, the higher their IQ and the better they did in school.”
Maybe these children are just as intelligent, if not more so, as their privileged cohorts, maybe their IQs do not suffer. Maybe those who are employed to judge the child’s intelligence(someone from the middle or upper classes) lacks the capacity to recognize an intelligence that differs from theirs reality, or, if not different, is expressed in an unfamiliar way?
Perhaps, in some cases, it is they(the judgers) who suffer from lower levels of intelligences? This would limit their ability to teach, in a meaningful and lasting way, poorer children, which would then cut-off the child’s inability to succeed in a world built to suit the upper classes?
I’m just sayin’….
Whatever the case, we should talk to babies…: )
