Today is a sober Juneteenth. We still have a lot of work to do.

It’s also Friday – many thanks to those who sent in links. It's also the birthday of a frequent contributor!

From Julie: A librarian may have discovered an original Star Wars script!

From Cassandra: The gorgeous painting Flaming June has arrived in New York.

From Holly: Records as awesome room decorations!

From Twitter: How does one observe Ramadan in outer space?

Also from Twitter: On Wednesday, I posted about “Prattkeeping,” aka zookeepers posing with animals a la Jurassic World. I am delighted to report that it’s become a real thing, and my local zoo is in on it, too!

Have a safe and spiffy weekend, everyone. See you next week.

Frilling sent the Flaming June article to me. She deserves credit for that amazing link, or for at least remembering how important that painting is to me. Do we love that woman or what?

Re: Flaming June

I really liked the article. I think it did the painting justice, however...

“Why it’s called Flaming June, now one knows.”

I can venture a guess. Teeehee

“… he points out that the red flowers in the scene’s upper-right corner are oleanders, which were known to be poisonous. This makes the woman a femme fatale, a dangerously alluring figure who would seduce the unwary into oblivion”

I see that too. But, I wonder instead if it could mean/show that some (inflamed by the surrounding beauty, the placid sea mirroring the drowsy sun) would rather ingest oleanders and die peacefully (blissfully) than to continue to be a witness to the seemingly perpetual ugliness of everyday life? Why does she have to be a femme fatale? Why are the oleanders meant for her victims and not herself? Intriguing….

I can’t let go of Flaming June today.: )
